Delegate Election Notice
The American Federation of Teachers’ Convention will be held July 13-16, 2018, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Baltimore Teachers Union will elect Seventy-seven (77) delegates and no alternates to the AFT Convention.
The procedures for the election of delegates to the AFT Convention are governed by Article VIII, Section 1 of the AFT Constitution, and Article VI Section (14)(b) and Article VII, Section 3(i) of the Baltimore Teachers Union Constitution. In accordance with the Baltimore Teachers Union practice, the BTU will waive the restriction in Article IV, Section 3 of the BTU Constitution to permit full-time staff of the Union to vote for and be elected as delegates to the AFT Convention.
The President of the Baltimore Teachers Union will be a delegate to the aforementioned convention and will receive all reasonable expenses for transportation, housing and food incurred while attending the convention.
Any other delegate elected will receive round trip transportation (of the Union’s choice) and $500 towards expenses for the AFT’s Convention.
Delegates Nominations and Election Procedures:
Any member of the BTU who has been in good standing for one (1) year (April 24, 2017) preceding the filing of the nomination may be nominated by either another member in good standing or by himself. Nominations must be submitted on the attached Nominating Form to the Union office at 5800 Metro Drive by 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2018.
The Election will take place on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, between the hours of 1:00p.m.-7:00p.m. at the BTU office, 5800 Metro Drive. In order to vote, a person must meet the following requirements:
- Be a member in good standing by Friday, April 20, 2018
- Appear on the Baltimore Teachers Union membership roster
- Appear at the poll, Baltimore Teachers Union, 5800 Metro Drive, between the times stated above
- Present picture identification (BCPSS ID is acceptable.)
The election shall be by secret ballot conducted by Elections USA. Absentee voting by mail shall be permitted only upon applications from members who are ill or absent from work where they are normally employed at the time of voting because of either vacation or employment tour of duty. A request for an absentee ballot shall be made to the Chapter’s respective secretary no later than ten (10) days prior to the election and shall contain the grounds therefor. Absentee ballots shall be valid only if they are received by noon on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Absentee voting shall be conducted with all proper safeguards for secrecy of the ballot. There will be no proxy voting. A list of those nominated and who qualified will be sent out in advance of Election Day in a BTU Election Update.
