Darlene Brown has been a paraprofessional in the Baltimore City School System for 21 years. She worked at Leith Walk Elementary, George W. McMechen, Walbrook and she is currently at Afaya Public Charter School. She works on life skills with special education students, which she enjoys very much. “You know what you are getting with special education students,” Darlene said.
Darlene has also served as a classroom paraprofessional and Para-Educator. She has been a union member since 2000 and was recruited into the union by the late and former Executive Board Member, Eloise Larkins. “I really didn’t know much about the union,” Darlene said. “But Eloise thought I would be a good problem solver and a good person to have as a BR.”
Darlene says she learned a lot after she joined the union and eventually Ms. English asked her to run for the Executive Board. Darlene has served as Member-at-Large for the PSRP chapter and was recently elected as Elementary School VP for the PSRP Chapter.
“I want to get more people involved in the union,” Darlene said. “They are the union and they have to be in control of it.”
